Document 2993
GROVER CLEVELAND. TLS: "Grover
Cleveland" as President-elect, 1p, 8x10. New York, 1893 January
6. To Ginna & Co., New York. In full: "I have received the
beautiful calendar for 1893 which you were kind enough to send me. Please accept
my thanks for this evidence of your thoughtfulness." On November 8,
1892, former President Cleveland, who had lost the presidency to Benjamin
Harrison in 1888, defeated him, to become the only ex-President to be elected
President. GINNA & CO., a New York printer and tin can manufacturer
(1874-1901), was known for its high quality and craftsmanship. Their mastering
of one-color lithography with shadings and gentle lines mixing with thicker
ones produced greater depth and detailing, using as many as 12 different
printing plates when necessary. This letter was written by Cleveland from his
New York City office at 12 West 51st Street, just off Fifth Avenue. Stained,
creased. Folds do not touch signature. Toned from prior framing. Upper right
corner worn.
