Document 173102
HARRY S TRUMAN. Partly Printed DS: "Harry
S Truman" as U.S. Senator, 4¼x2¾ card. United States Senate
identification card signed by Truman as Chairman of the Special Committee
Investigating the National Defense Program, certifying that Lydia Lee "is
employed by the Committee as Editor...." Disturbed by reports of inefficiency
and corruption in the defense program, Missouri Senator Harry S Truman proposed
that the Senate investigate the national defense program. A committee was formed
in 1941, with Truman as chairman. Called the Special Committee Investigating
the National Defense Program, it was better known as the Truman Committee. The
Truman Committee became a financial watchdog for President Roosevelt's
administration during WWII. By uncovering corruption and waste, the
committee saved the government hundreds of millions of dollars, bringing Truman
to the attention of FDR, who chose him as his running mate in 1944. Light crease
touches printed text. Soiled. Overall, fine condition.
