Document 76509
JAMES BUCHANAN. ALS: "James Buchanan"
as U.S. Minister to England, 1˝p, 4˝x7, front and verso. 56 Harley
Street (England), 1855 November 13. To Lady Alice Peel, a daughter of the late
British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. In full: "I send you a note for
the Princess written in much haste, as I am at the present moment greatly
involved in business. I send it open for your perusal as I have taken your name
in vain. You may close it, if you please, before delivery. Many thanks for your
kind inquiry after Miss Lane. She has arrived at home in fine health &
spirits after a short & agreeable passage. Wishing you a pleasant visit to
Paris." Former Congressman and Senator, U.S. Minister to Russia and Polk's
Secretary of State, Buchanan was named by President Pierce as U.S. Minister to
England on April 11, 1853. In the Spring of 1854, his niece, Harriet Lane,
joined him in England, returning to the Buchanan home at Wheatland, near
Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the Autumn of 1855. The Princess referred to by
Buchanan was one of Queen Victoria's daughters. Four months after writing
this letter, Buchanan returned to the United States, arriving in New York in
April 1856. His public reception in New York demonstrated an interest in him as
a possible presidential candidate. Two months later, he was chosen the
Democratic nominee for President and easily defeated the newly formed Republican
Party's nominee, John C. Frémont. Mounting strip along right blank margin of
verso, light show through at front left. Lightly creased. Fine
condition.
