JAMES BUCHANAN
Authorizing a "letter of ceremony" to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia.
Partly Printed Presidential Warrant signed: "James Buchanan" as 15th U.S. President, 1p, 8x9¾. Washington, 1858 April 17. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State [Lewis Cass] to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter of ceremony, dated today, addressed by me to His Majesty the King of Prussia dated this day, and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant."
