Document 202243
JIMMY CARTER. Typed Quotation signed: "J.
Carter", 1p, 5¾x7¼. Dated: "March 26, 1979". In full: "I am
convinced that other Arab people need and want peace. But some of their leaders
are not yet willing to honor these needs and desires for peace. We must now
demonstrate the advantages of peace and expand its benefits to encompass all
those who have suffered so much in the Middle East." On March 26, 1979, the
Camp David peace treaty was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the White House. President Jimmy Carter spoke
of peace at the treaty-signing ceremony. At a state dinner that evening, Begin
suggested that Carter be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and Sadat agreed. Begin
and Sadat had won the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. Sadat was
assassinated in 1981; Begin died in 1992. In 2002, Carter finally received his
Nobel Peace Prize. Fine condition.
