     Document 43735

JAMES MADISON
President Madison grants land purchased from the father-in-law and great-grandfather of two future U.S. Presidents, the Harrisons.
Partly Printed DS: "James Madison" as fourth U.S. President, 1p, 14½x8¼. On vellum. Washington, 1812 July 20. Countersigned: "Edward Tiffin" as Commissioner of the General Land Office. In full: "Know Ye, That Ebenezer Heaton of Hamilton County having deposited in the Treasury a certificate of the Register of the Land office at Cincinnati, whereby it appears that full payment has been made for the north half of section Twenty eight of township Three in range Four of the Land lying between the Great Miami river and the Virginia reservation, sold under the direction of the Register of the Land office at Cincinnati, by virtue of the right of pre-emption granted by law to certain persons who have contracted with John Cleves Symmes or his associates, There is granted, by the United States, in pursuance of the act of Congress in that case provided, unto the said Ebenezer Heaton the half section of land above described: To have and to hold the said half section of land, with the appurtenances, unto the said Ebenezer Heaton his heirs and assigns forever." JOHN CLEVES SYMMES (1742-1814) was appointed one of the three judges of the Northwest Territory in 1787 and held the position until Ohio was admitted into the Union as the 17th state in 1803. In 1788, Symmes obtained from the government a grant of one million acres bounded on the south by the Ohio River and west by the Miami River, and was the founder of the settlements of North Bend and Cincinnati thereon. Because of the enormity of the land owned by Symmes, these land grants were preprinted with his name. In 1795, Symmes' daughter, Anna, married Lieutenant William Henry Harrison, future President of the United States. 2-inch paper seal affixed with red wax at lower left. Lightly soiled, creased and shaded, not affecting signatures. Contemporary file notes on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
