JAMES MADISON and WILLIAM JONES. Partly
Printed DS: "James Madison" as President and "W Jones"
as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 12½x8¼. Appointment of George Davis as
"a sailing Master in the Navy of the United States". A sailing Master
ranked between a Midshipman and a Lieutenant. JONES had refused the post
of Secretary of the Navy in 1801 when offered it by President Jefferson,
preferring to remain in Congress (1801-1803). With the War of 1812 raging, he
accepted President MADISON's appointment and served from January 12, 1813
to December 2, 1814. From 1816-1819, Jones was President of the Bank of the
United States. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "Jo" in Jones.
Lightly rippled and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
