Document 5837
JAMES MONROE and JOHN McLEAN. Partly Printed
DS: "James Monroe" as President and "John McLean" as
Commissioner of the General Land Office, 1p, 15x9½. On vellum.
Washington, 1823 January 14. Grant of land "in the District of
Jeffersonville and State of Indiana containing eighty acres" to Jacob
McIndoo of Bartholomew County. McLEAN had served in the House of
Representatives (1813-1816) and as an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme
Court (1816-1822) before being appointed Commissioner of the U.S. General Land
Office by President MONROE in 1822. Five months after signing this
document, Monroe appointed McLean Postmaster General. McLean served from July 1,
1823 through the John Quincy Adams administration, which ended on March 3, 1829.
Four days later, President Jackson named McLean to the Supreme Court, where
he served as an Associate Justice until his death in 1861. Folds do not
touch signatures. Upper and lower right blank corners missing. Lightly rippled
at lower left, where 1¾-inch paper seal has been affixed with red wax. Overall,
fine condition.
