Document 41829 JOHN F. KENNEDY Taken during JFK's first race for the Senate in 1952. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Louise-with thanks &/every good wish-John Kennedy". B/w, 9x7. Taken during JFK's first Senatorial campaign in 1952. Six women (one of whom is likely Louise) are depicted at a table at Kennedy Headquarters. A "Kennedy for Senator" poster depicts JFK and his slogan "He will do more for Massachusetts". On November 4, 1952, Republicans Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon won Massachusetts' 16 electoral votes in their successful bid for the nation's highest offices. In the race for the U.S. Senate, however, Democratic Congressman John F. Kennedy defeated incumbent Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. Lodge had served in the Senate from 1937-1944, when he resigned to enter combat duty with the Army; the first U.S. Senator since the Civil War to resign in order to go to war. Lodge won numerous medals and was reelected to the U.S. Senate in 1946, the same year war hero John F. Kennedy was first elected to Congress. In 1960, Kennedy was elected 35th President; the unsuccessful Republican Vice Presidential candidate was Henry Cabot Lodge. Bold, clean writing. Surface creases, not near writing, barely visible head on. Pinhead-size stain and 1/8-inch tear at right blank border.
