Document 4650 JOHN TYLER The President writes to his Secretary of the Treasury. ALS: "J. Tyler" as tenth U.S. President, 1p, 4¼x7¼. No place, no date. To Mr. Spencer. In full: "I invited your attention a few days since to the change made in the pension agency N.H. - So shew (sic) the form and colour of the times." Docketed in unknown hand on verso: "President Tyler". When President Harrison died on April 4, 1841, Vice President Tyler succeeded to the office of the President. Although the "Powers and Duties" of the office of the President constitutionally devolved on the Vice President, Tyler set a precedent by taking the title "President". It was not until the 25th Amendment was ratified in 1967 that when a President dies, resigns or is removed from office, "the Vice President shall become President." JOHN C. SPENCER served as President Tyler's Secretary of War from October 12, 1841 to March 3, 1843, when he became Secretary of the Treasury, serving until May 1, 1844. Stains and mounting remnants on verso, no show through. 2 ink stains at lower blank margin. Fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 4650 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
