LYNDON B. JOHNSON. Early TLS: "Lyndon B. Johnson" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1944 February 7. To Mr. J.H. Frederick, Vice-President, Traffic and Transportation Bureau, Chamber of Congress, Austin, Texas. In part: "Your letter of February 4th has just been received and I am sorry, indeed, that I must bring you the news that the application for rehearing filed by the Braniff Airways, Inc. has been denied. As you well know I took a very keen interest in this matter and talked with the Board on several occasions even before the application for rehearing was submitted. I have also talked with the Attorney for the Braniff Airways about the matter and was happy to work with him on it. However, as you will note from the attached order, which I have just received, this petition for rehearing has been denied...." Shaded at margins. Staple rust stains at upper left edge. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper left margin. Overall, fine condition. With a mimeographed copy of the "Order Denying Petition for Rehearing, Reargument and Reconsideration" adopted February 2, 1944 by the Civil Aeronautics Board. It concerned the "applications of Continental Airlines, Inc. Braniff Airways, Inc. Essair, Inc. Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc. for certificates of public convenience and necessity under section 401 of the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938, as amended and the petitions of Fort Stockton, Tex., Alpine, Tex., and Brownwood, Tex." A "Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity" was a certificate issued by the Civil Aeronautics Board (now issued by the Department of Transportation) to an air carrier under Section 401 of the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938 (now the Federal Aviation Act) authorizing the carrier to engage in air transportation. Lightly creased. Shaded at blank right edge, light marks common to copying through text (all legible). Staple holes at upper left blank edge. Overall, fine condition. Johnson represented Texas in the House of Representatives from 1937-1948. Two items.
