MILLARD FILLMORE. Partly Engraved Bond signed: "Millard Fillmore" as Comptroller of the State of New York (and Whig nominee for Vice President), 1p, 14x9 (14x14 including the interest warrants at bottom). Hudson, New York, 1848 July 1. On light parchment paper. Countersigned: "Jeremiah Van Rensselaer" as President, "J.W. Fairfield" as Secretary (dated by him "September 15th 1848") and "Archd Campbell" as Deputy Secretary State of New York. Fairchild has also personally signed the remaining 32 $35 interest warrants, 2¼x¾, attached to the lower portion of the bond. In part: "Know all Men by these Presents, That the Hudson and Berkshire Rail-Road Company, Acknowledge themselves indebted to the Comptroller of the State of New-York, for the use of the holder of this Bond, in the sum of One Thousand Dollars. Lawful money of the United States, which sum they promise to pay at the Mechanics' Bank, in the City of New-York, to the Comptroller of the State of New-York, for the use aforesaid, in twenty years from the date of this Bond, with interest at the rate of seven per cent per annum, from this date payable semi-annually, on the first days of May and November, in each year...This Bond is issued under the provisions of an Act of the Legislature of the State of New-York, passed December 14th, 1847, entitled, 'An Act to release the prior lien of the State on the Hudson and Berkshire Rail-Road, and to authorise (sic) the Stockholders thereof to relay the same with a heavy t rail,' which provides that the Bonds issued in pursuance thereof (the amount authorised being limited to $175,000.) shall be made payable to the Comptroller of the State, for the use of the holders thereof...such bonds...shall thereupon immediately become a mortgage lien upon the said Road and its appurtenances...." Three weeks before this bond was issued, FILLMORE had been nominated as General Zachary Taylor's running mate for Vice President at the Whig Party Convention (held in Philadelphia, June 7-9, 1848). The Whig ticket defeated Democrats Cass and Butler on November 7, 1848. On February 20, 1849, Fillmore resigned as Comptroller after serving just 14 months in that office. Thirteen days later, he was sworn in as Vice President. When President Taylor died on July 9, 1850, Fillmore became President. 4 cancellation holes touch Fillmore's signature. Lightly creased, pinhead-size paper burn at blank area between lines of text. Vertical fold touches the "a" in Jeremiah. Lightly worn edges. Overall, fine condition.
