Document 179552
RONALD REAGAN. Draft ALS: "Dutch"
as Governor of California, ¼p, 8x10, yellow lined paper. (Sacramento,
California), 1967 May 12. To Art Bussey. In full: "Just a line to
say it was good to hear from you & to recall those nights in the stadium.
Thanks for the kind words." The nickname "Dutch" was first applied to Ronald
Reagan in childhood by his father. According to Reagan's autobiographies, he
received the nickname soon after his birth, from his father's remark that he
looked like "a fat little Dutchman". Reagan has also stated that his father gave
him the nickname because of the Dutch boy haircut, once popular for little boys,
that his mother gave him when he was a toddler. When asked to reconcile the two
stories of the nickname's origin, Reagan stated that the haircut strengthened
the use of the nickname. Reagan must have known Bussey from his early years in
Illinois. Reagan was Governor of California from 1967-1975. The date and
recipient's full name have been written by a secretary, who has also initialed
this letter, indicating that it was typed for the Governor's signature. Slightly
creased. Fine condition.
