     Document 258338

RONALD REAGAN. Typed Quotation signed: "Ronald Reagan", ½p, 8½x11. In full: "If we are not to shoulder the burdens of leadership in the free world, then who will?" Noted to be from his "Speech, Conservative Political Action Conference, March 17, 1978". The speech, entitled "America's Purpose in the World", was delivered at the 5th Annual CPAC Conference. After discussing the Carter Administration's foreign policy in Latin America (especially Panama) and Africa and the Soviet Union's goals, Reagan talks about the United States' position in the world. In part: "Leadership is a great burden. We grow weary of it at times. And the Carter administration, despite its own cheerful propaganda about accomplishments, reflects that weariness. But if we are not to shoulder the burdens of leadership in the free world, then who will? The alternatives are neither pleasant nor acceptable. Great nations which fail to meet their responsibilities are consigned to the dust bin of history...." In 1980, Reagan defeated President Carter, the first incumbent Democrat to lose a presidential election since Grover Cleveland in 1888. Slightly creased. Fine condition.
