RUTHERFORD B. HAYES and RICHARD W. THOMPSON. Partly Printed DS: "R.B. Hayes" as President and "R.W. Thompson" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 15½x19. On vellum. Washington, 1877 November 27. Appointment of Ambrose K. Michler as "Assistant Paymaster, with the relative rank of Ensign in the Navy...." THOMPSON served as Secretary of the Navy under HAYES from March 12, 1877 until December 19, 1880. On December 14, 1893, MICHLER was promoted to Paymaster with the rank of Lieutenant by President Grover Cleveland. Docketed (unknown hand) in Spanish and Spanish stamp affixed on verso. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "s" in Thompson, and blue paper seal, which is affixed at lower margin. Light show through of stamp at upper right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
