Document 349
THEODORE ROOSEVELT. TLS: "T.
Roosevelt", 1p, 6½x7¾. New York, 1910 August 19. On letterhead of
"The Outlook" to former NYC Police Commissioner William McAdoo at his summer
home in Magnolia, Mass. In full: "It is fine to hear from you! Do let me
see you sometime. I need hardly say that I felt as deeply as you have over the
infamous assault upon the Mayor." Ten days earlier, New York City's Mayor
WILLIAM J. GAYNOR was shot and severely wounded by a discharged city
employee. Gaynor served as Mayor from 1910 until suffering a fatal heart
attack in 1913, said to have been brought about by injuries suffered in the
assassination attempt. ROOSEVELT had succeeded to the Presidency in 1901
when President McKinley was shot and killed by an anarchist. In 1912, Roosevelt
himself was shot while campaigning for President. WILLIAM McADOO was
Police Commissioner of New York City from 1904-1906. ½-inch tear at horizontal
fold at blank right margin. Lightly creased and soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
