Document 87741
ALEXANDER D. BACHE. ALS: "A.D. Bache",
1p, 5x8, affixed to slightly larger sheet. No place, 1849 April 5. To
Hon. Geo P. Marsh. In full: "I send you the letter of Mr. Larson as you
request, & one from Mr. Th. Alexander, who I understand is likely to be in
the Senate from Maryland in place of Mr. Johnson." Maryland Senator
REVERDY JOHNSON had resigned on March 7, 1849 to become Attorney General
in President Zachary Taylor's Cabinet. He was succeeded by Thomas G. Pratt,
former Governor of Maryland, not by Alexander. Vermont Congressman GEORGE P.
MARSH had just resigned, having been appointed U.S. Minister Resident to
Turkey by President Taylor. Physicist ALEXANDER D. BACHE was Superintendent
of the U.S. Coast Survey (1843-1867) when he wrote this letter. He was one of
the incorporators of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846 and was the first
President of the National Academy of Sciences (1863). Ink smudged at date.
Lightly rippled from mounting, light ink transfer at upper blank margin.
Mounting on verso shows through to blank corners. Fine condition.
