MURIEL HUMPHREY. TLS: "Muriel
Humphrey", 1p, 6x8. Washington, D.C., 1968 November 20. On her
personal letterhead to Gail D. Lynch, Woodston, Kansas. In full: "The
Vice President and I were happy to autograph the picture you sent. We thank you
for your good wishes and join in sending our best wishes to you." Written
just fifteen days after her husband, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, had been
defeated by Richard Nixon in the 1968 presidential election. Muriel Buck
Humphrey (1912-1998) had married Hubert Humphrey in 1936. Her husband, who had
been a U.S. Senator from Minnesota since January 1949, was elected as LBJ's Vice
President in 1964, serving until 1969. After Humphrey, who was re-elected to the
Senate in 1970, died in office in 1978, the Governor of Minnesota appointed Mrs.
Humphrey to fill the vacancy. Serving from January 25, 1978-November 7, 1978,
she was the only woman in the Senate at the time. Fine condition.
