Ike's driver, staff aide and ?.
TLS: "Kay Summersby", 1p, 6x8. Supreme Headquarters, Allied
Expeditionary Force, Office of the Supreme Commander, 1945 9 April. To Mr.
Herbert Dessert, Fall River, Mass. In full: "I am writing to
acknowledge receipt of your letter. When Germany surrenders to the Allies, I
suggest you renew your request and I know General Eisenhower will be glad to
autograph your envelope." Paper clip impression in upper left blank corner,
lightly soiled in blank right margin, else fine. With original typed
envelope, postmarked U.S. Army Postal Service, A.P.O. Summersby has
penned "Free" in upper right corner. Signature of censor in bottom
left corner. The recipient did not have to wait long before "Ike" would be free
to autograph his envelope: Germany surrendered in May 1945. Irish-born Kay
Summersby first met General Eisenhower when he was wearing just two stars. After
serving as his driver in England, she later joined his staff and accompanied him
to North Africa, where he planned the D-Day assault. Rumors later flew about
their relationship, which was obviously close, and even Mamie was distressed by
photographs of the two together. If Eisenhower indeed had plans to divorce
his wife to marry Summersby, he put his sense of duty ahead of his heart. He
wrote to Mamie almost twice weekly, sending 319 letters in three years,
curtailed his relationship with Summersby upon returning to the U.S. and refused
to confirm rumors of an affair. Summersby, who died in 1975, detailed her
side of the story in Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D.
