CARL LINNAEUS, OLOF CELSIUS and OTHER SWEDISH PROFESSORS

cut from a document, 1p, 8x3˝. Upsala (Sweden), 1745 May 17. Six lines in
Swedish on verso mentioning King Gustav Adolf. CARL LINNAEUS (born
"Linné") is known as the "Father of Taxonomy", the science of classifying plants
and animals. His system of binomial nomenclature showed how all the world's
plants could be identified by two Latin names. Many of his principles and
taxonomic names are still used today. His autograph is rare in any form. Olof
Celsius was a professor of theology who wrote the two-volume
Hierobotanicon, which identified all the plants mentioned in the Bible.
In 1742, his nephew, ANDERS CELSIUS, also a professor at Upsula, was the
first to describe the centigrade thermometer that now bears his name. The
others were also professors at the University of Upsala, founded in 1477 and
still in existence. It is located about 40 miles north of Stockholm. Light
folds touch some signatures. Light show through. Lightly stained, one touches
the "elsi". Overall, fine condition.
