ARTURO FRONDIZI
President of Argentina, 1958-1962.
Original Caricature signed: "A. Frondizi". B/w, 8x13. Drawn from life
by caricaturist Jack Rosen, head of Security at New York's Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel. Rosen personally escorted important guests to their rooms, sketched them
in the elevator, finished the drawings at home and got them autographed.
Arturo Frondizi was President of Argentina from May 1, 1958 to March 29,
1962. A lawyer and economist, Frondizi opposed Juan Perón and rose to
prominence after the latter was overthrown in 1955. With Peronist support, he
was elected President in 1958. As President, he attempted to revitalize the
economy by imposing strict austerity measures and arranging for aid from the
International Monetary Fund. He allowed the Peronists to participate in the 1962
elections. After they scored impressive victories, outraged anti-Perón elements
in the army arrested Frondizi and annulled the elections. Frondizi was exiled to
the tiny island of Martín García, the same island to which Perón was exiled in
1945. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Lightly soiled at blank
margins. Fine condition.
