Document 9444 EDMOND HOYLE The last edition of his rules published before his death, personally signed by him. His book: Mr. Hoyle's Games of Whist, Quadrille, Piquet, Chess, and Back-Gammon, 216p, 4x7. Hardcover, 14th Edition. London, c. 1768. Signed: "Edmond Hoyle" on authentication page opposite the contents. On the top of this page appears: "Advertisement. This Book having been entered at Stationers-Hall, according to Act of Parliament, whoever shall presume to print or vend a pirated Edition, shall be prosecuted according to Law. The Proprietor has already obtained an Injunction against Nine Persons, for pirating, or selling pirated Editions. No Copies of this Book are genuine, but what are signed by the Author, Edmond Hoyle." A second statement is printed beneath the Advertisement. Hoyle has personally signed beneath this statement: "To the Reader. The Proprietors of the following Treatise have thought proper to give the Publick Notice, that they have reduced the Price of it, that it may not be worth any Person's while to purchase the incorrect pirated Editions, which have been already obtruded on the World; and that the Author will not undertake to explain any Case, but in such Copies as have set forth by himself, or that are authorized as revised and corrected under his own Hand." Strong signature of the authority on card and board games. He codified the rules of whist in his book A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist (1742), and in successive editions of the book he added new material on whist together with treatises on quadrille, piquet and backgammon. Hoyle wrote several other books, and "according to Hoyle" has come to mean "according to the rules". Hoyle died on August 29, 1769 in London at the age of 97, a year after this edition was published. Succeeding editions of this book were signed in facsimile. Covers are present, but are separated from the book. Spine intact and attaches all pages. "Hughes" written on blank flyleaf (unknown hand). The flyleaf is shaded, but Hoyle's signature page and all others are in fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 9444 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
