Document 23556 CAROL II King of Romania in the 1930s. Signature: "Carol/R" as King of Romania, 1p, 5¼x3½. Fine condition. Accompanied by stamped, typed transmittal envelope. Lightly creased. In 1921, Prince Carol (1893-1953), eldest son of King Ferdinand I, married Princess Helen of Greece. In 1925, Carol renounced his right of succession to the throne, deserted his wife and went to Paris to live with a Romanian woman, Magda Lupescu. When his father died in 1927, Carol and Helen's son succeeded to the throne as King Mihai. In 1928, Carol formally divorced Princess Helen and, in 1930, returned to Romania, supplanting his nine-year-old son as King, becoming King Carol II. Miss Lupescu followed Carol back to Romania and exerted great influence over his decisions. King Carol II's reign was marked by continued attempts to please both Germany and Russia. After abolishing political parties and establishing a dictatorship, Carol II, pressured by German opposition, was forced to flee Romania to Spain in 1940. He had reigned from June 8, 1930 to September 6, 1940. Carol II was succeeded by his 19-year-old son. In 1947, Carol and Magda Lupescu were married and spent most of their remaining years in Portugal. Carol II died in 1953, Lupescu in 1977. Two items. SEE IF DOCUMENT 23556 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
