Document 28954 YIGAL ALLON General in the War of Independence and Foreign Minister. Photograph signed: "Yigal Allon" in English. B/w, 3½x5½. Fine condition. Accompanied by TLS: "Susan Hattis Roler" in English, as advisor to Mr. Allon, 1p, 8x10. The Knesset, Jerusalem, 1978 March 28. To Barry Leeds, Monroe, N.Y. In part: "Mr. Allon has been Major-General (Reserves) since 1948 and has followed a political career since 1954. His last post in Government was that of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs 1974-1977. His party, Labour, has been in opposition since last July." Folds, light vertical fold touches "thi" in signature. Born in the Lower Galilee in 1918, Allon was among the founders of the Palmah, the crack commando unit of the Haganah in 1941. He became its commander in 1945. During the 1948 War of Independence, Allon commanded decisive operations in all parts of the country, and in the final stages of the War he commanded the southern front, driving the invading Arab armies from the whole of the Negev, including Eilat and part of the Sinai peninsula.
