Document 40108 FREDERICK D. GRANT Eldest child of Ulysses S. Grant. Closing of TLS: "Frederick D. Grant", 1p, 4˝x2˝. No place, no date. Cut from a letter with a portion present: "If you will give me the date of his/[portion missing] he matter further./[portion missing] y sincerely yours". Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912) was the eldest of three boys and one girl born to Ulysses and Julia Dent Grant. A West Point graduate, he served as Aide-de-Camp to General Philip Sheridan from 1873-1881, resigning his commission as Lieutenant Colonel in 1881. He was U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary from 1889-1893 and New York City Police Commissioner (1894-1898). Brigadier General of Volunteers during the Spanish-American War, Grant was commissioned Major General in 1906. He married Ida Honoré in 1874. Their daughter Julia, born in the White House in 1876, was married to Prince Michael Cantacuzene, 2nd Count Speransky. Princess Julia was 99 when she died in 1975.
