Document 5220 CALVIN COOLIDGE Thanks to his Postmaster General for die proofs of stamps, many honoring past Presidents. TLS: "Calvin Coolidge" as 30th U.S. President, 1p, 7x8¾. On White House stationery but written in Lynn, Mass., 1925 August 8. To his Postmaster General, Harry S. New, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you very much for sending me the handsomely mounted and attractive set of die proofs of the postage stamps that have been issued under the administrations of your predecessor and yourself in the department. It is a most attractive collection which I am glad to have." Lynn is 11 miles north of Boston. Coolidge, former Governor of Massachusetts, spent his summers in Massachusetts and at his family homestead in Plymouth, Vermont. Hubert Work became Harding's Postmaster General on March 4, 1922. He was succeeded by HARRY S. NEW on February 27, 1923. After Harding's death on August 2, 1923, New continued as Postmaster General, serving until Coolidge left the White House on March 3, 1929. Most of the postage stamps issued by the U.S. Post Office Department from 1922-1925 honored Coolidge's predecessors: 2¢ Washington, 2¢ Harding, 3¢ Lincoln, 5¢ T. Roosevelt, 6¢ Garfield, 7¢ McKinley, 8¢ Grant, 9¢ Jefferson, 10¢ Monroe, 11¢ Hayes and 12¢ Cleveland. In addition, a 4¢ stamp honoring Martha Washington was issued in 1923. Shaded at blank margins and at bottom right corner from irregular mounting. 2 file holes and oval receipt stamping in upper blank margin. Lightly soiled at bottom right corner.
