Document 157647 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER The General sends the "cigar-chomping" President of Coca-Cola a box of Cuban cigars. TLS: "Ike E" as President of Columbia University, 1p, 7x10¼. [New York], 1949 May 31. On his five-star "DDE" stationery to Robert W. Woodruff, New York. In full: "Today I am sending on to you a box of cigars that were sent to me from Cuba. I am shipping merely the inside box -- Mamie saw the outside part, which is some kind of mahogany, and made me promise to give her that when the box should be empty. Upon starting to pack them I discovered to my horror that they were not sealed up in cellophane like most of the cigars that come from Cuba. Consequently these may be entirely dried out an unfit for smoking. I hope this is not the case and that you will find them enjoyable. I am attaching a note which confirms the news you gave me the other day. I am sure that by this time Dan Elkin has been confirmed in his new rank." Paper clip marks at upper left blank corner, staple holes above the five stars, usual folds, upper half of verso tanned with no show-through. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by the original shipping label, 5x3½, with note probably in the hand of Woodruff's secretary: "Cigars/They seem rather dry, but I have/put them in the humidor & hope they will be/all right". Lightly creased and soiled. Paper clip impression at upper left margin. Overall, fine condition. ROBERT WINSHIP WOODRUFF (1889-1985) was President of The Coca-Cola Company from 1923 to 1955. He shaped the fledgling soft drink enterprise and its bottler franchise system into a corporate giant with the world's most widely known trademark. Reviews of Mark Pendergrast's 1993 book about Coca-Cola, characterize Woodruff as "cigar-chomping...who hosted presidents at his Georgia plantation" including, no doubt, Dwight D. Eisenhower.
