DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
As President re: the Southern Baptist resolution that the U.S. not establish diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
TLS: "Dwight D. Eisenhower" as 34th U.S. President, 1p, 8x10½. The White House, Washington, 1953 February 20. Exactly one month after his inauguration, Eisenhower writes to Dr. J.W. Storer (sic), President, Executive Committee, Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville, Tennessee. In full: "Through the courtesy of Dr. Pruden and Senator Carlson I was pleased to receive your thoughtful letters of December eighteenth transmitting to Mr. Dulles and me copies of the Resolution on the Vatican which was adopted by the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee on December 18, 1952. You may be sure that I respect the viewpoint and appreciate the interest of your Executive Committee in this important matter and that the resolution will receive most careful consideration. May I take this opportunity to thank you and your Executive Committee for the thoughtful and constructive manner in which you presented your suggestions. Copies of this reply are also being sent to Dr. Pruden, to Senator Carlson and to Mr. Dulles for their information." Horizontal fold touches signature. Stray ink mark above the "n" in Eisenhower. Paper clip impression at upper left blank corner. Fine condition. Accompanied by TLS: "J.W. Storir" as President and "Pauti Reuth" as Executive Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1p, 8½x11. "COPY" typed at upper left corner. In part: "At the request of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention the undersigned are transmitting to you a resolution which was unanimously adopted...." Lightly creased. Paper clip impression at upper right corner. Overall, fine. Accompanied by a typed copy of the "Resolution on the Vatican", 1p, 8½x11. Not signed. In part: "The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, representing more than 7,000,000 Baptists in 22 states and the District of Columbia...unanimously joins in the earnest hope, based on the conviction that religious liberty and the separation of church and state are the foundation stones of our democratic way of life, that the new administration will not renew any form of diplomatic relations with the Vatican or any other ecclesiastical body. And we hereby authorize the President of this body, and the Executive Secretary, to transmit this resolution to the President-elect and the Secretary of State-designate of the United States." Paper clip impression at upper right, stray ink marks beneath copy. Overall, fine. In 1867, the U.S. Congress had banned diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
