     Document 177992

GEORGE BUSH
To a resident of West Palm Beach, about George W. Bush's first race for public office and his own presidential ambitions.
Blue-bordered TLS: "George B" with 11 word holograph postscript signed "GB", 1p, 6¼x4¼ card. Houston, Texas, 1978 July 10. To Carolyn B. Alley, West Palm Beach, Florida. In full: "You were so nice to send on that clipping and your best wishes for George. You can imagine the excitement around the Bush household about this race. The numbers are there and we do think he can win. Glad to hear things are well for you there. Thanks again." Handwritten postscript: "Save some energy for/'80 - I'd love to have your help!" Fine condition. With original postmarked addressed envelope, worn and lightly creased. GEORGE W. BUSH defeated two Republicans in the primary but, on November 7, 1978, Democrat Kent Hance defeated him by 54,729 to 48,070 votes and was elected to Congress from Texas's 23rd Congressional District, which included Bush's hometown of Midland. This was George W. Bush's only race for Congress and the only election he lost. He was elected Governor of Texas twice, serving from 1995-2001. G.W. Bush was sworn in as 43rd U.S. President this past January 20th. GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH sought the 1980 Republican nomination for President, alluded to in the handwritten postscript. Bush lost the nomination to Ronald Reagan, who asked him to be his running mate after his first choice, former President Ford, declined. George Bush was Vice President from 1981-1989 and 41st U.S. President from 1989-1993. It is ironic that this letter is written to a resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, in the county that cast the infamous "butterfly" ballots that history may prove resulted in George W. Bush's victory in the 2000 presidential election. Two items.
