Document 16036 GERALD R. FORD Signed as Congressman from Michigan. Postcard Photograph signed: "Gerald R. Ford". Color, 5½x3½. Captioned on verso: "Rep. Gerald R. Ford, Jr./5th District, Michigan". In 1948, Gerald Rudolph Ford was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-first Congress and was reelected to the 12 succeeding Congresses, serving from January 3, 1949 until his resignation from the United States House of Representatives December 6, 1973, to become the 40th Vice President of the United States. He had served as Republican Minority Leader from 1965-1973. Ford was the first Vice President to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Congress pursuant to the 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. He was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States on August 9, 1974, when President Richard Nixon resigned and served until January 20, 1977. He ran for a full four-year term in 1976 but was defeated by Jimmy Carter. Nicked at the loop of the "d" in Gerald. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Slightly worn edges.
