Thank you for writing to me." Article II Section 2 of the Constitution gives the President the power to "appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls". WALTER F. GEORGE served as Democratic Senator from Georgia from 1922-1957. When Al Smith received the presidential nomination on the first ballot at the 1928 Democratic National Convention, Senator George finished second in the voting.
