On May 18, 1796, President George Washington approved and signed "An act providing for the sale of the lands of the United States in the territory northwest of the river Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river". The act had been signed by Speaker of the House Jonathan Dayton and, as President of the Senate, by Vice President John Adams. On February 21, 1812, President Madison approved and signed "An act to establish a land district in the Illinois territory, east of the district of Kaskaskia, and to attach certain public lands to the district of Jeffersonville". These were public lands ceded to the United States by the Delaware, Potawattamie, Miami and Eel-river Indian tribes at Fort Wayne on September 30, 1809. This land grant was signed just two months after President Madison attached the former Indian land to the Jeffersonville district. Documents signed by two Presidents are extremely desirable.
