Document 41196 JOHN F. KENNEDY Re: a student draft deferment during the Korean War. TLS: "John Kennedy" as Massachusetts Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1952 June 25. To William F. Kelly, East Boston, a member of his staff. In full: "This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 24th, written in behalf of Mr. John E. Stevens, of 79 Richmond Street, Dorchester, Massachusetts, who is anxious to secure a deferment from his local draft board to enable him to continue his studies at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. In reply, I wish to advise you that since Mr. Stevens is a resident of the Twelfth District, which Congressman John W. McCormack has the honor of representing in the House, I must, as a matter of congressional courtesy, refer your letter to him for reply. I am sure that Congressman McCormack will be most happy to do what he can to assist Mr. Stevens in this connection; and I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful at this time." JOHN WILLIAM McCORMACK (1891-1980) represented Massachusetts as a Democrat from 1928-1971. He was Speaker of the House from 1961-1971. He did not seek reelection in 1970 and died on November 22, 1980, exactly 17 years after John F. Kennedy died. Folds, horizontal fold touches tops of "J" and "K" in signature. Light stain at upper right blank corner. Pinhead-size stain at blank right margin. Overall, fine condition. SEE IF DOCUMENT 41196 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
