Document 253303 MARTIN VAN BUREN Jackson's Secretary of State copyrights a book on court cases authored by son of Washington's Secretary of State. Partly Printed DS: "M. Van Buren" as Secretary of State, 1p, 8x12¾. Washington, 1830 June 14. In full: "I certify, That Octavius Pickering Has this fourteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty and of Independence the fifty-fourth deposited in the Office of the Department of State, a certain Book consisting of five hundred and ninety one pages entitled Reports of Cases argued and determined in the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts By Octavius Pickering, Counsellor at Law Volume 7 The Copy-right whereof is claimed by Octavius Pickering as author under the provisions of 'An act or the encouragement of Learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned,' passed on the 31st day of May, A.D. 1790, and of An act supplementary to an act, entitled, 'An act for the encouragement of Learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors of such copies, during the time therein mentioned,' and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching, historical and other prints,' passed on the 29th of April, A.D. 1802." 1½-inch diameter Secretary of State's Office seal affixed at lower left. After the United States passed its first copyright law in May 1790, amendments, such as the one enacted in 1802 (mentioned in this document), were made to reflect new materials and innovations. OCTAVIUS PICKERING (1791-1868) was a son of Washington's Secretary of State and War and Postmaster General, Timothy Pickering. From 1822-1840, he was reporter of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts and prepared the Reports of Cases in the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, 24 volumes, Boston: 1822-1840. He was working on the Life of Timothy Pickering by his Son at the time of his death, completing only the first of four volumes. Docketed on verso of blank integral leaf. Fragile. ¼-inch separations at horizontal folds at blank margins. The blank mid-horizontal fold separated and was repaired in 2 places on verso with plastic tape (no stain). Lightly creased.
