Document 4839 MILLARD FILLMORE The former President is planning a trip down south, possibly to the Caribbean, with a member of his Cabinet. Black-bordered ALS: "Millard Fillmore", 1p, 6¾x8¼. Buffalo, 1854 January 28. To Francis Granger. In full: "Mr. Kennedy and myself contemplate a southern Journey about the last of February or first of March. We should both be very happy to have you join us. Will you not do so? We intend to go down through the Atlantic States and return by the Mississippi. If convenient we may visit Cuba and some other W. Indian Islands. Shall we not have the pleasure of your company? I enclose a letter from Mr. Kennedy which will show how anxious he is that you should join us." Whig FRANCIS GRANGER lost the Vice Presidency to Democrat Richard Johnson in 1836 and served as Postmaster General under Harrison and Tyler in 1841. Kennedy was probably Whig JOHN P. KENNEDY, Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy (1852-1853). The letter is black-bordered because of the death of Fillmore's wife Abigail on March 30, 1853. In fragile condition. Nicked and torn at margins touching some words, all letters intact. "Hairline" tears touch some words in text (all letters intact). Tape repairs at folds and tears lightly show through. Pencil notations (unknown hand) at upper and lower blank margins. SEE IF DOCUMENT 4839 IS FOR SALE RIGHT NOW!!
