Document 27292 RICHARD NIXON The former President on diplomatic relations between Communist China and the United States. TLS: "Richard Nixon", 1p, 7¼x10½. La Casa Pacifica, San Clemente, California, 1979 February 23. To Kenneth J. Siman, Charlotte, North Carolina. In full: "Your letter of January 18th was most thoughtful. It was a privilege for all the guests to be present at the White House for such a momentous event. Let us hope that the new relationship between the P.R.C. and the U.S.A. will contribute to peace in the world. With every good wish." On January 1, 1979, the United States opened diplomatic relations with the P.R.C. (People's Republic of China) and severed ties with Taiwan. On January 29, 1979, China's Deng Xiaoping met with President Jimmy Carter at the White House. The process toward recognition of Communist China was begun during the Nixon administration when President Nixon visited China (February 21-28, 1972) and sought normal relations. On February 28, 1972, the United States and Communist China issued a joint statement pledging "normalization" of relations. For the text of that joint communique, go to http://www.china embassy.org/eng/7155.html. The "Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America", January 1, 1979, can be found at http://www.china embassy.org/eng/7152.html.
