     Document 49378

RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Losing the popular vote, he won the presidency by being awarded electoral votes from Florida and three other states.
Signature: "R.B. Hayes", 3½x2, pink card. Republican Governor Hayes of Ohio defeated Democratic Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York in the closest election in U.S. history. In an election where 20 disputed electoral votes eventually went to Hayes (Florida's four, Louisiana's eight, South Carolina's seven and one from Oregon), the Republican won 185-184 in the electoral college. Tilden had more popular votes (4.3 million to 4.0 million) but Hayes won more states, 21-17. Hayes declined to run for a second term in 1880. Lightly soiled, pinhead-size stain in upper blank margin. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Slightly creased.
