RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Former President sends large photograph to New York City Republican leader.
ALS: "R.B. Hayes", 1p, 5½x8½. Spiegel Grove, Fremont, O., 1887 July 20. To New York City Republican leader "James S. Lehmaier" (sic). In full: "I have directed McKecknie (sic) & Oswald, Photographers of Toledo, to send you by Express an inlarged (sic) Copy of Cabinet Size portrait taken by them last year for the Republican Club of the City of New York. This in compliance with the letter of inquiry & request by you last month." "McKechnie" is the correct spelling of the Toledo, Ohio photographer and "Lehmair" is the New Yorker's name. With Grant's death in 1885 and Arthur's death in 1886, Hayes was the only former President alive at the time and as a Republican, his picture was prominently displayed at party gatherings across the country. Light ink transference in blank areas also touches signature. Two file holes in blank left margin, which is shaded touching some letters. Light L-shaped shading touches date and one word of text.
