THEODORE ROOSEVELT, T.B. REED, R.J. OGLESBY and OTHERS
Beautiful engraved program honoring Civil War vets, featuring images of Grant & Lee.
Printed Program-Menu signed: "T. Roosevelt" as Governor of New York on cover in pencil, 8p, 7x8¾, separate boards and sheets tied together at left with a red, white and blue ribbon. "Banquet of The Hamilton Club of Chicago on the Thirty fourth Anniversary of Appomattox Day, 'The First Day of Peace,' Monday, April the tenth, eighteen hundred and ninety nine. The Auditorium". Pictured on the cover are Generals Grant and Lee and Miss Liberty waving the American flag at Civil War veterans. Inside on one of the blank pages, ten have signed in pencil, including: "T.B. Reed" (Speaker of the House), "R.J. Oglesby 1899" (Civil War Major General, former Governor and U.S. Senator from Illinois who died 14 days after signing this program) and "S.M. Cullom" (former Governor and U.S. Senator from Illinois). On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant to end four years of Civil War. At this commemoration, speeches were given about both Grant and Lee. Theodore Roosevelt's speech was titled "The Strenuous Life". Stains on left side of cover from ribbon lying on it for 100 years. Back cover soiled, else fine and lovely.
