Document 5926 THEODORE ROOSEVELT The President on Nathan Bedford Forrest and Dr. William Gorgas. TLS: "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1907 November 21. To Dr. John A. Wyeth, New York. In full: "I think that it needs an ex-cavalryman of Forrest's command to send me two invitations to dinner in one mail: My dear sir, I know you will understand that it is impossible for me to accept either invitation, and all I can say is that I pray that on each occasion you will express my hearty regrets in one case for the Southern Society, and in the other case for Dr. Gorgas, and my earnest wishes for the success of the occasions." JOHN ALLAN WYETH, who was President of the New York Academy of Medicine (1907-1910) when he wrote this letter, had served in the 4th Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War. NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST (1821-1877) was the celebrated cavalry officer of the Confederate Army who later founded the Ku Klux Klan. The President's mother was from Georgia and her brothers fought for the Confederacy. DR. WILLIAM CRAWFORD GORGAS is credited with freeing Havana, Cuba from yellow fever during the period of the Spanish-American War and was the Chief Sanitary Officer during the building of the Panama Canal. The President fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Browned, stained, soiled and ink-marked. "Roosevelt" is smudged. 1-inch separation at blank horizontal fold.
