     Document 19670

ARTHUR GODFREY
The "ole redhead".
Photograph signed: "Arthur Godfrey". Sepia, 4¾x6½. Arthur Godfrey (1903-1983) began his radio career as a staff announcer on NBC (1930-1933). He moved to CBS in 1934, again as a staff announcer, but very quickly became a personality with his own programs. Arthur Godfrey Time was broadcast from 1945-1972. In the late 1940s, Godfrey did three different CBS radio shows a day, one in the morning and two at night. He was enormously popular with his ukelele-playing folksy manner, earning around $400,000 a year (even before additional exposure on TV after 1948 made him a broadcasting superstar). CBS estimated in the 1940s that 40 million people listened to him at least once a week. Minor surface creases and striations (most not evident head on), do not touch signature. Overall, fine condition.
