     Document 189666

JEB STUART MAGRUDER
One month before Watergate, he is sorry that the Special Assistant to Republican Party Chairman Bob Dole is leaving.
TLS: "Jeb", 1p, 6¼x9¼. Washington, D.C., 1972 May 15. To W. Ernst Minor, Special Assistant to the Chairman, Republican National Committee, Washington. In full: "I am sorry to learn that you will be leaving the Republican National Committee and I want you to know that I, too, enjoyed our association here in Washington. I'm sure that in the months ahead we will have occasion to meet again. I will pass your suggestion on to Curt that he meet you in New York on May 25th so that you can introduce him to Governor Reagan and the Governor's aides and security personnel. I will have Curt get in touch with you directly to work out the final details. Ernie, I wish you the very best of luck in your new position with the Environmental Protection Agency, and will look forward to our paths crossing again in the not too distant future." MINOR had served as Assistant to Vice President Agnew before going to work as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Bob Dole. One month after Magruder wrote this letter, on the night of June 16-17, 1972, five burglars broke into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office building and were arrested. JEB STUART MAGRUDER, President Nixon's deputy campaign director and Deputy Communications Director at the White House, was charged with perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice for his role in the Watergate cover-up. The Senate Watergate Committee had discovered that Magurder and fellow White House staffer Egil Krogh had hired G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt to supervise the break-in. Magruder headed a dirty tricks division of the Committee to Re-Elect the President. He spent seven months in prison. Folds, horizontal fold touches the "J" and "b", else fine. With original typed postmarked envelope. Fine condition. Two items.
