Document 76081
AL HIRSCHFELD. Self-Caricature inscribed and
signed: "To a fellow caricaturist/Hirschfeld" in pencil, 8¼x10¼ overall,
image 6¾x8½ (one surface). Drawn for caricaturist Jack Rosen, Hirschfeld has
written: "R" in black ink. HIRSCHFELD was a renowned
cartoonist, author and theatrical caricaturist with "The New York Times" from
1929. From 1945 on, Hirschfeld began incorporating the name of his daughter,
Nina, in his drawings. The addition became so popular with his audience that
after 1956 he began adding a numeral after his signature to signify how many
"NINAs" he had hidden in the work. Hirschfeld died on January 20, 2003 at the
age of 99. ROSEN, as head of Security at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel, often accompanied important guests to their rooms, sketched them in the
elevator, finished the drawing at home and got it autographed. Slightly creased,
touching signature and 1 word of inscription. Lightly soiled at blank areas.
Fine condition.
