PAUL DESCHANEL. ALS: "Paul
Deschanel", 2p, 4˝x7 (front and verso). No place, Saturday, no
date. In French, not translated. To an unknown woman. He believes his father had
expressed his regrets that he was already engaged. Paul Deschanel (1855-1922)
was elected President of France in 1920, defeating Georges Clemenceau.
Shortly after his election, Deschanel, who was sworn in on February 17, 1920,
began to suffer from senile dementia. He jumped off the presidential train in
his pajamas on one occasion and was found floundering in the fountains at the
Rambouillet chateau on another. After seven months in office, Deschanel was
forced to resign on September 21st in favor of Premier Alexandre Millerand.
Deschanel's father, author and critic Émile Deschanel (1819-1904), served in the
French Senate from 1881-1904. Lightly creased. Folds, light vertical fold
touches the end of the "l" in Paul. Light show through of writing. Fine
condition.
