PORFIRIO DIAZ. Manuscript LS: "Porfirio Diaz" as
President of Mexico, 1p, 9x12. Mexico City, 1897 October 8. In
Spanish, not translated. To Juan Lindolfo Cuestas, President of Uruguay.
Diaz has received a letter informing him that Uruguayan President Juan
Idiarte Borda (1844-1897) was assassinated and was succeeded by Lindolfo Cuestas
(1837-1905), the Senate President. He expresses his condolences and hopes for
continued friendship between the two Latin American countries. IDIARTE
BORDA, President since 1894, was assassinated on August 25, 1897.
LINDOLFO CUESTAS served as Acting President until February 10, 1898 when
he became Provisional President until February 15, 1899. Elected in his own
right, Lindolfo Cuestas served as President from March 1, 1899 until March 1,
1903. Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915) was President of Mexico from 1877-1880
and 1884-1911. Staple holes at upper margin. Lightly shaded. Folds, not at
signature. Lightly creased.
