Document 158831
JOE SEWELL. Partly Printed Check signed: "Joe Sewell",
8¼x3. Tuskaloosa, Ala., 1952 August 14. Drawn on The First National Bank
of Tuskaloosa, Ala., payable to the Gulley Hunting Club for $25.00. Joe Sewell
(1898-1990) played shortstop for the Cleveland Indians (1920-1930) and New York
Yankees (1931-1933). He had a lifetime batting average of .312 in his 14-year
career. From September 13, 1922 to April 30, 1930, Sewell played 1,103 straight
games, a major league record later broken by Lou Gehrig. Sewell's career rate of
one strikeout every 63 at-bats is by far the best in history, and his 3 K's in
1932 are the fewest ever for a full season. No one threatens to break those
records or his career record of just 114 strikeouts in 7,132 games. Fine
condition.
