GERALD R. FORD and APOLLO-SOYUZ
In his first month in office, the President greets the Apollo-Soyuz
astronauts.
Photograph signed: "Gerald Ford", "Tom Stafford", "Vance
Brand" and "D.K. Slayton". B/w, 10x8 overall, image
9½x6½ (one surface). Official NASA photograph taken in the White House on
September 7, 1974. In addition to President Ford and the three American
astronauts, the two Soviet cosmonauts (Valery N. Kubasov and Alexei A. Leonov),
Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin, NASA Deputy Administrator George M. Low and
Soviet Chief of Cosmonaut Training George V. Shatalov are also pictured. The
Soviet cosmonauts and support crew members were touring Washington, D.C.,
September 7-8, 1974. The Apollo-Soyuz mission was the first
manned space flight conducted jointly by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Both
Apollo and Soyuz were launched from their respective countries on
July 15, 1975. The docking in space of the two crafts occurred on July 17,
and joint operations were conducted for two full days. Soyuz landed in
the U.S.S.R. on July 21st and Apollo landed near Hawaii on July 24th. For
