HERBERT HOOVER
1928 campaign photograph that may have helped elect Hoover.
Large Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mrs. Harry V. Woodhouse/With
Kind Regards of/Herbert Hoover". Sepia, 12¼x16. Presidential candidate
Herbert Hoover poses with his German shepherd, King Tut, in a 1928 campaign
photograph by Underwood & Underwood. In a March 28, 2000 press release
about presidential pets, Ronnie Elmore, Associate Dean of Veterinary Medicine at
Kansas State University, said that "when Herbert Hoover was running for
President he was told that he had a cold appearance, so his adviser suggested
that he get a dog. Hoover got a large German shepherd he named King Tut.
Pictures of him and his dog were sent all over the United States during the
campaign. People said it kind of gave him a warm appearance", he said.
"So that's just one example of where it's actually recorded that he got a dog
because he thought it might affect the election, and maybe it did." Slight wear
and nicks at edges. Some imperfections in the original negative are reproduced
on the image but do not detract from its fine appearance. Slightly rippled at
top edge.
