GROVER CLEVELAND
The President designates Amos Stickney as President of the Missouri River
Commission.
Typed DS: "Grover Cleveland" as 24th U.S. President (and former
22nd U.S. President), 1p, 8x7. Executive Mansion, 1896 February 11. In
full: "Lieutenant Colonel Amos Stickney, Corps of
Engineers, United States Army, is hereby designated to be President of the
Missouri River Commission, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved
July 5, 1884." Initialed at lower left: "D.S.L." by Daniel
S. Lamont, Cleveland's Secretary of War. In 1886, MAJOR AMOS STICKNEY became
the first District Engineer of the Louisville District, which took a major role
in building canals on the Ohio River. From 1892-1893, Stickney was Pittsburgh
District Engineer. President McKinley later appointed Stickney President of the
Mississippi River Commission (1901-1903). Rubber stamp docket at upper right.
Tape stain at upper edge, ink smudge at blank left margin. Overall, fine
condition.
