RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Sending a note to an acquaintance's mother.
ALS: "Rutherford B. Hayes", 1p, 5½x8½.
Fremont, Ohio, 1888 August 29. To Guy S. Cornly. In full:
"Thinking your mother would enjoy reading the enclosed note I send it, to be
returned sometime." Hayes declined to run for a second term in 1880. As he
prepared to leave the presidency, he wrote an old college classmate, in part:
"Nobody ever left the Presidency with less regret, less disappointment, fewer
heartburnings, or more general content with the result of his term (in his own
heart, I mean) than I do." He and Mrs. Hayes returned to their home, Spiegel
Grove, in Fremont, Ohio, where she died in 1889 and he died in 1893. Letters
signed with Hayes's full signature are scarce and desirable. Horizontal fold
touches the tops of the "R", "B" and "H". Lightly creased.
Fine condition.
